The MDMA matrix defines eight dimensions and three levels. The question that comes up most after reading it is always the same: what does this look like in a real case? This article answers that — with the concrete indicators an evaluator looks for, and three sector-based application cases.
Qué separa un nivel de otroWhat Separates One Level from Another
No es una diferencia de intención. Es una diferencia de evidencia verificable.
It's not a difference in intent. It's a difference in verifiable evidence.
| Dimensión | Señal de Nivel Incipiente | Señal de Nivel Estandarizado |
|---|---|---|
| Dimension | Incipient-Level Signal | Standardized-Level Signal |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Intervention logging | Output is pasted into the document with no origin marker. | Every intervention has a timestamp, an owner, and a retrievable input. |
| 2. Model version | No one knows which version generated an output from months ago. | Version history is linked to specific outputs. |
| 3. Professional validation | Signed off with no trace of what changed relative to the output. | The case file keeps the original output, the edit, and the signed conclusion. |
| 4. Risks and bias | The output is treated as objective data, unquestioned. | Each node documents identified limitations and biases. |
| 5. Leadership policy | A policy exists, but no one can show how it's actually met. | The policy is verified case file by case file. |
| 6. Communication to third parties | The answer to an auditor depends on who you ask. | Any third party can reconstruct the process without relying on a narrative. |
| 7. Continuous monitoring | "We feel the system improved" — with no data behind it. | Real data series: modification rate, evolution by version. |
| 8. Non-conformities | The same error gets fixed over and over without ever being logged. | Every modification is logged as a resolved non-conformity feeding improvement. |
Tres casos aplicadosThree Applied Cases
Fintech — scoring crediticio.
Fintech — credit scoring. A fintech's analysts copy an LLM's credit-rejection justifications straight into the case management system, without recording that AI was involved. Facing a regulatory audit, they can't distinguish which decisions had algorithmic input. Diagnosis: Level 1 in Intervention Logging — no origin marker, only the final output.
Tax and accounting — transfer pricing. A firm uses AI to draft a comparables analysis. The professional adjusts figures and drops one comparable, but the final report doesn't distinguish their own judgment from the system's output. Facing a tax authority request, there's no documentary evidence of the reasoning applied. Diagnosis: Level 2 in Professional Validation — real judgment was exercised, but never documented as such.
Public sector — internal control. A public agency detects the same type of error in a case-preselection system's outputs, month after month. Each time it's fixed on the spot, but since it's never logged as a pattern, no one notices they've spent eight months solving the same structural problem. Diagnosis: Level 2 in Non-conformity Management — reactive correction without systematized learning.
None of these three cases involve bad faith. All three involve the absence of a system that makes traceability automatic rather than dependent on people's memory and good will. That, ultimately, is what MDMA does: it turns "we trust it was done right" into "we can show it was done right."
